Jim Henson - Happy Birthday!

Today would have been Jim Henson's 85th birthday.

Anyone who knows me knows this is a holiday as far as I'm concerned. ;)

I remember vividly when this episode of "Great Performances" first aired on our local PBS channel in 1994.  I videotaped it.  And I watched it over and over again.

I still have the tape, and even converted it to a DVD a few years ago.
And I recently was given the "official" VHS release by by friend Rick.  I didn't even know it was actually released!  Nice little piece for the collection for sure.

I couldn't get enough of this show though.  Along with the other Muppet and puppet videos I had I watched it over and over.  Studying it.  Trying to learn from it.

And between this and the book "Jim Henson: The Works" that came out the year before I think I learned more about being creative, and being a good person, than I learned about puppetry.

1993 and 1994 were pretty dark times for me.  Even though I was smiling through so much of it.

Thank you Jim.
Not just for what you had done for the art I love so much, and not just for being an inspiration to generations of puppeteers and film makers.
But thank you Jim for bringing me joy and leading a path to being a good person.

50 Years... Still Strong

Sesame Street aired it's first episode fifty years ago today.
So much has changed, and the show is still making waves.  Pretty amazing.
It was a few years later I became obsessed with it and The Muppet Show...  I was the perfect age at that time as both shows were running, and I was in awe of them.

The Muppet Movie - 40 years!

"The Muppet Movie" changed my life.
Sounds crazy, but its true.  At 4 years old a whole new world opened up to me.
I was already a Muppethead.  But seeing that movie, in the theater in 1979, opened my eyes...

This is somebody's job.  And I bet they love it.

So here I am, 40 years later...  A puppeteer, puppet maker, and film maker.  It's a great life.  And I love that I get to share it with so many other people.  Thank you!

The Muppet Movie is coming back to theaters this weekend and next week...  Special screenings for the 40th anniversary. If you've never seen it on the big screen it's pretty amazing.  I'll be there!  Can't wait!

For Now...

I am happy to say (brag?) that I got to see Avenue Q in 2003 right after it opened on Broadway with the original cast.
Which was right before it won a few Tony's...
Now 15 years later, it's wrapping up in spring 2019.
It's really cool to see that a puppet show that's both parody and tribute to Sesame Street last that long on and off Broadway.  The show has been an inspiration to many puppeteers.  And when done right the local productions can bring new puppeteers to the art.
Hoping to catch it again on a tour sometime...

Driving Rain... On a rainy day...

I love when puppets are in music videos!

Thank you Rich...

This quote has meant so much to me for so many years...
A couple weeks ago my old friend and partner in crime at Elmwood Productions showed up at the studio and gave me this plaque.
He said; "It's Elmwood!"
And he's right.
Wow.  Too cool man, thank you.

I have always felt like the people who work with Elmwood are family.  We're a crazy, silly, dysfunctional, and hysterical family.  And I love it.

Happy 4th of July!
