Sweet dreams Gaelon...

Just about 24 hours ago I got a call from Jim.  For Jim to call me anytime before noon on a non-production day means something is bad.  It was ten of nine.
And it was bad.
One of Jim's closest friends, and a friend of mine, Gaelon Morris, passed away at some point overnight.

What a week...  An hour and a half later Mike tells me his mom/my friend, Jodi, is in the hospital...  She needed an appendectomy!  What a day for all those involved.

And with Blue passing away earlier this week on Monday, it was for a minute, for me, all too much.

And then I said to Mike:
"It can only get better."

Well ain't that the fucking truth.

Blue and Gaelon are in way better places, and Jodi is home already...

Gaelon was a friend of mine too.  I met him through Jim when we both worked at Borders a decade ago.  Gaelon and I quickly became friends, always making sure when he stopped in to chat about movies, puppets, and sic-fi, or whatever came to mind.  He and I, and Jim, and Russ, and our other buddy Vin would make it a point to take lunch and hit up China Pan in the plaza and really cut loose with our conversations, loudly.  Just loud enough to annoy the other people eating there.  We all got a kick out of that.
After I left Borders he would come in and visit me from time to time at Blick, and every time he would bring his baby daughter with him.  I loved that.
And I'd see him at events at Jim and Jaime's place, or at the "Hobbit Hole" in Bristol...  Watching "Fanboys" for the first time with him, Mark and Kelly was a blast...  I'm sad we won;t be able to share that kinda stuff with you anymore man...
Just some random memories of a fellow puppet fan...  And friend...  And good husband and father...  And good man.

Sweet dreams Gaelon...

A Tale of Blue

In May of last year Brie and I found a place to move into together.  Of course we'd be bringing Ripper and Tugger, my two cats.
When we first checked the place out there was this small black cat named Blue still living there, among the current renters last few belongings.  She was really friendly and interested in meeting us.  And just wanted some attention.  We signed for the place and on June first it was to be ours.

On June second I stopped in to drop off some things (my plan was to be in by June 10th, and Brie by then end of summer) and there in the empty room that would become my studio was a litter box, a big bowl of cat food, and a big bowl of water.  And within seconds there was Blue.
The previous tenant left her behind.  What an asshole.  What a cute cat though.  And all she wanted was love.  And I loved her right away.
But I was afraid to keep her.  Tugger was 16 years old at the time and really set in his ways.  I was afraid he would hate the idea of this little 2 year old girl running around all the time.

God bless my friend Nick.  Nick took one look at her and offered to take her home.  He had two cats already and figured "what's one more, they'll all love each other"
And again GOD BLESS NICK for trying at least!  Morgan and Hobbes (his cats) wanted nothing to do with her and after a week he brought her back to me.  Within that week I was just about settled in (no couch though) and Tug and Rip were in the new place for a few days and got used to her scent.  Now she was back and she'd just have to get used to them.  We thought about finding her a new home, and even briefly tried too, but she got too attached to Ripper quick, and Brie and I got too attached to her to let her go.
The first time she met Tug and Rip was a little tense.  But within hours Rip and Blue were chasing each other around playfully, and the old man Tug just didn't really care.

Then Tug got sick.  So sick he almost died.  I think it really spooked Blue how sick he was.  She'd avoid him while he was awake, and when he slept, very often she'd sit by his side as if to guard him.
Modern veterinary medicine saved Tug.  And he got mostly better.  But Blue still mostly kept her distance.  Her new buddy was Ripper anyway.
Then she very quickly to get used to Brie.  Her and Brie were in love.  She couldn't get enough of sitting with Brie in the room that is Brie's studio.  Blue kinda claimed it as her own too.  She finally had a family that I'm sure she knew would never let her go.  Never leave her behind.  She was so happy.

Blue was ever the hyper cat, never one to walk in a straight line from place to place.  More one to make a maze out of table legs and chairs and run as fast as she could.  She was always rolling around and waiting for a pet.  And whenever I'd pet her in Brie's studio she'd make it point to nibble my fingers as if to say; "This is the girls room!  No boys allowed!  But thanks for the scratching!"

Every morning she would make it a point to be up just before Brie, as Ripper and Tugger and I still slept to get in their own time without us bugging them.
Everything had been going great...

Then the worst thing I can think of happened on Monday.
The little girl, just now 3, passed away.  She took a fall and died.  All I could do cuz it happened so fast was hold her as she went away.  She was being her usual self and playing fast and slipped off a table.  Within seconds she was gone.  It's just not fair.  I know, life isn't fair.  But I'm not talking about my life.  She still had so much to do.  She was just three.  It's not fair for her.

Blue was in my life to ten months.  And it just wasn't long enough.
I'll miss the way she chirped as she ran, the way she dug for China in the litter box, and the way she smiled when she got to be held and pet.  I'll miss the way she smells so much.

The first nite she was here with me I still didn't have a couch.  I sat on the living room floor with some pillows and blankets to watch a movie.  "The Muppet Movie" to be exact.  I remember it's a tradition of mine to watch it in a new home as soon as I can and cuz she curled up on the blanket near me and fell asleep, and while Gonzo sang "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday" I thought the line; "old friends, who've just met" seemed so perfect for her and this family...

Sweet dreams Blue, love you and miss you already

This one's for you Blue....

In my head...

Driving home from work my brother popped into my mind.  Not for any specific reason.  He just does from time to time.  Sometimes it's something as small as a fleeting thought of something from when we were kids, other times it some deep thought about what is life and how to live it well...
Tonite it was just a simple some how entry into the head.
And then I couldn't really shake it.  I left work around 8:15ish, and since I hit the road tip now he's still in there, over an hour later.

I wish I could make sense of why this happens, and why this time I can't shake it off with a little laugh about goofy off with him.  I guess I just miss him.  It happens.

Above my desk, where I am typing from right now hangs a "Steve the Vampire" poster from last year's Elmwood Productions tenth anniversary screenings that were happening this month.  Steve is smiling down on me.  And it makes me smile...  Thanks Mike and Jody for the poster.  It's one of the reminders everyday of what I really want to do in this life.  And that's make people smile.  And if I can do it with puppets - EVEN BETTER.

Sometimes our mind's throw us curveballs...  Sometimes "my mind is a pice of shit" hahahaha...  Tonite it's not though.  Tonite I am grateful for the life I have and the people in it...

Sunday nite thoughts...

It is better to walk away?  Knowing you were a success, quietly and with grace...

Or is it better to stay on a sinking ship and scream about glory?

They say rats on ships start swimming away before it sinks.  Before anyone else even sees it coming.  So rats really aren't foolish when it comes to self-preservation.
As a creative person you try to have yourself on a few ships at once, sailing...
And sometimes you want to dock before you sink.

Just thinking...

Movies, movies, movies... EVIL DEAD?

As I do trey to keep this blog about my adventures in Puppetry and other art, and sharing things relating to those...  Like music I love, stuff at PiP, other people's puppets, and so on and so on I sometimes veer off into something like this...

I love "Evil Dead" movies.
Love them.
My first thought when I found out a re-make a few years ago was "Why?"  Why re-make a good move?  Shouldn't we be re-making bad movies that could have been good?  And make them good!?

Then I found out Raimi/Campbell were producing.  And I got it.  And I'm in on it.  And I'm more than ready for April 5 to see this flick.

Kevin Smith announced a while ago his intention to make "Clerk 3".  I'm excited.  Love his flicks.  And this week he posted the title page for the script online.  Bring it on Silent Bob, bring it on.

The Muppets keep posting pics online from their next movie, "The Muppets... Again".  As long as they make Pepe bigger part, I'll be a happy camper.  Hell, I'll be a happy camper anyway when it comes out!

Just did a websearch of upcoming "Hollywood" movies.  Not alot I'm excited for right away.  "G.I. Joe 2" will be fun, I'm sure...  The new Oz looks cool (Sam Raimi after all!), and I'm a sucker for all the X-Men movies, so I'll be there to see "The Wolverine" ASAP...
But over all it looks like I'll be spending a lot of my movie watching time on Netflix with the indy's and documentaries...

So back to "Evil Dead"...
It's count down time...
When I figure out what time I'm going to see it I'll even post it here if anyone wants to join us (I'm sure Elmwooders Russ and Nick and Mike and Tricky and Jim will be with me)

27 Days...
