Kermit - The Collection

Kermit the Frog
Hand Puppet from the 1990's
He has become kind of a pin collector. When I go to puppetry related things, and there is a pin available I try to pick one up and it ends up on Kermit. So far he's got a Puppeteers of America membership pin, a Sesame Place button from the year they opened (1980, I think), a 2001 MuppetVision 3-D pin, BiMP pin, Avenue Q pin, 2005 Puppetfest pin, and a Muppet Show on Tour Gonzo button from 1985
And I'm offically old today. Hahaha

Commercial Break... Here's a good way to spend your money...

Click the picture above to see 7M3 live...

Seven Mary Three is one of the only real rock bands left out there... Forget about Cumbersome... If 7 Mary 3 is a "grunge" band, then so is Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Iron And Wine, and Willie Nelson...

Do yourself a favor and pick up this live CD... Or even their last studio album "day and nighdriving" which was the best album of 2008

And also... In case you've been under a rock:

The People of Haiti Need Help...

Rowlf the Dog - The Collection

Rowlf
I got him when I was a kid. Probably one of the best likenesses of a Muppet in toy form

Influences...

In 1996 I went to Dragon*Con in Atlanta with the hopes of breaking into the comic book industry as a writer/artist. I was more interested in puppetry, but cartooning and writing were something I felt I was pretty good at, and I love comics, so I figured I should give it a shot. Clearly after my life took a different direction and I did follow that puppet dream instead. But at that convention I was at a panel where a few of my favorite comic type people were discussing their work.

James O’Barr (creator of The Crow), Tim Bradstreet (amazing illustrator), and John Shirley (screenwriter) were discussing the work they do. At that time they were all tied to The Crow. Mr. O’Barr was the guy who wrote and drew the original comic, Mr. Shirley co-wrote the first movie based on the comic, and Mr. Bradstreet was doing cover art for the current comic, which was an adaptation of the second Crow movie.
During the panel another artist who I can’t remember made fun of yet another artist for being too much like one of his influences. And James O’Barr shut him down and said; “There’s nothing wrong with that. I think it’s important to embrace your influences.” (That's a bit paraphrased, from memory)
And that really stuck with me.
So many “artists” I know try to deny what influences them, or be so different from their influences that they embarrass themselves in the process, and I don’t understand it.
So with that in mind I’ve never shied away from admitting what influences me, as a writer, a puppeteer, and artist. So I wanted to take some time and share some of them with you…
Each picture is a link to that artist, or work/character(s), or a great fansite… And I’m sure I’m forgetting something/someone, so maybe later I’ll do another post on this theme.

Herb - The Collection

This is Herb.
Mouth Puppet and Collection
This is the closest thing you'll ever get to a real Muppet to own... And I recommend them to everyone!
A great puppet, great collectible, and great fun!
Check out the website by clicking on Herb, you get to pick your own features, clothing, etc... It's way more fun to hit NYC and do it in person though!
I want more! Ha ha ha!!!
I posted him with the tags "Collection" and "Mouth Puppet", since it is a bought puppet, it falls in the collection, but since I did pick out the features I did kinda create Herb too!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Now Over to Puppet News:
The Muppet Movie has been added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to the registry that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant, to be preserved for all time. These films are chosen as works of enduring importance to American culture.

(very old photo by Jorge)

Some mornings I wake up and I think to myself: "Why the Hell did I ever move back to Connecticut?" Today was one of those mornings. So I got up made a pot of cofffee, popped in Prince's latest CD. As the last track, "No More Candy 4 U", started I smiled. And I'm glad I moved back. If I hadn't I would have missed out on my amazing old friends and amazing new ones I've made since being back who never cease to make me laugh, my amazing family who also have words of true encouragment, and an amazing woman who always has my back... Without all of you I'm just a putz with a bunch of puppets...

Thank you, love you, Happy New Year!

Post Holiday Post...

Ahh, Christmas...
Ever.
This pic is the look on my face when I got a couple of my gifts, the latest Muppet Christmas Special; Letters to Santa, and the new Sesame Street book. And the picture was taken with the new camera she got me (told you she's the best). I've watched Letters to Santa three times now, Christmas night, the night after, and Sunday morning while drinking my coffee and flipping through the book...
And my folks hooked me up too; a new heavy duty sewing maching... I must have been good this year!
Jim, Shane (the new awesome guy) and I also did a live holiday show for a corporate party that went off great, pictures coming soon...
Can't wait for 2010... Elmwood has a lot of puppet stuff up our sleeves...
But for now...
One last time: Merry Christmas and Happy Whatever!
